About the Testudo Sculptures

As part of the University of Maryland's year-long 150th Anniversary celebration, the university initiated the Turtle Sculpture Project. This project, which is similar to the Crabs in Baltimore, was designed to extend the anniversary celebration into the community with art that is accessible to everyone. Artists throughout the Baltimore-Washington region transformed four-and-a-half foot fiberglass Terrapins into unique works of art that reflect their vision of the varied personalities and themes embodied in the university and its community. Individual and corporate sponsors lent their support by covering the cost of the structure and the artists' expenses. Fifty Terrapin sculptures will be displayed through September 2006 throughout campus and across the state to highlight the university's connections beyond campus. At the end of the display period, the sculptures will be auctioned off on October 19 in the "Fear the Turtle Auction" to raise money for scholarships.
